Old Masters Paintings and Antique Furniture from the 16th to the 18th century
Mantuan sideboard measuring 200 x 118 x 62 cm from the beginning of the 17th century, made entirely of walnut both outside and inside.
The notched rectangular structure is enriched by pilasters framing the two doors described by mirrors decorated with polybolato geometric bas-relief panels in the tradition of late Renaissance architecture. This sideboard also has rounded corners, due to notching, according to Tuscan fashions of the mid-Renaissance.
The pure line of the lexicon of the period is respected throughout and the volume as well as the layout in general anticipate solutions that would only develop in northern Italy at the end of the 17th century. The chamfering of the top tends to lighten the walnut of considerable thickness.
The Mantuan pattern of this sideboard is unmistakable with two doors separated by a central pillar part and with two small side doors almost at an angle that give balance, rhythm and harmony to the piece of furniture itself.
All the parts of the furniture are marked by tiles applied with linearity characterized by a vertical trend. Furniture that expresses elegance and sobriety still following Renaissance canons and above all a symmetry of shapes.
