19th & 20th century decorative arts.
This storage unit is made up of different modules resting on a sub-base and crowned with a cornice. Shelves, compartments closed by sliding doors and drawers of different heights alternate randomly. This heteroclism is reinforced by that of the marquetry which combines varied geometric patterns with a repertoire of flowers and birds, all equally different, the combination of which creates a unique piece of furniture.
Japanese production circa 1900 for export.
Hakone-Yosegi-Zaizu marquetry was developed in the late Edo period (1603-1867). The complex technique is based on the association of different very detailed geometric patterns. The colors of the patterns are obtained from those of the different species of wood used.
