The Cumaean Sibyl by Leonard Limosin Limoges circa 1535-1540

The Cumaean Sibyl
Leonard Limsoin
Limoges, circa 1535-1540

Inscription: SYBILA CUMAN
Monogram: L.L.

Several plaques illustrating the 12 sibyls are known in public collections indicating a certain success of this series. For example, other representations of the Sybil of Cumae, following the same iconographic model, are preserved for example at the Renaissance Museum, Château d'Ecouen (2), at the Musée de l'Évêché, Limoges (4), at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Reims (8), at the Musée des Arts décoratifs, Paris (2), or at the British Museum in London (complete set of 12).

Like three of the plaques from the British Museum’ series, ours bears the artist's monogram: L.L. which is quite rare.
