Christ bearing the cross - Louis de Caullery (c. 1580 - Antwerp 1621)

Oil on copper
Bears the marks of Pieter Stas and WGB.

Only seven signed paintings by his hand are known. Two of these are fully signed, Carnival (c. 1615, Hamburger Kunsthalle) and Feast in an Interior (also known as The Five Senses) (1620, Louvre collection, on display at the Musée de Cambrai). It is therefore difficult to establish a chronology. In recent years, a number of paintings of varying quality have been attributed to him. He painted in a wide range of genres, including architectural scenes, cityscapes, genre scenes, allegorical compositions and history pieces.
Louis de Caullery, Caulery or Coulery (Caullery, c. 1580 - Antwerp, 1621) was a Flemish Baroque painter known for his architectural scenes, cityscapes, genre scenes, allegorical compositions and history paintings. He was one of the pioneers of the art genre of merry societies and garden parties (fête champêtre) in Flemish painting.
