Max SCHOENDORFF (1934 - 2012) - Nyx (1981)

Max Schoendorff lives and works in Lyons. In 2000 he was represented in the exhibition The Phases Movement from 1952 to the New Millennium ( Le Movement Phases de 1952 à l'horizon 2001), held at the Kiosque Centre Culturel, Mayenne, and the Centre Noroit, Arras.

Initially he painted abstract, ample, "matterist" works, similar to those of his friend Modesto Cuixart. Later, inspired by religious history (descents from the Cross, the Holy Face, Crucifixions) or mythology (Venus, bacchanalia), his painting became figurative, fantastic, sometimes erotic, flayed. In dissecting myths, breaking them open in a gloomy and luxuriant celebration, he confused the line that separates anguish from orgasm. He illustrated Jacques Neyme's collection of poems À vif, à peine, un mot.
