Sacred Art, objects and decorations of religious life, devotional object
This large reliquary, in beautiful condition, offers us a rare composition of rolled and gilded papers, enriched with four canivets on enhanced gouache. The canivets frame a gouache print also enhanced, positioned as a central medallion.
On the speech bubbles of the two upper illustrations, some precious words are noted, undoubtedly taken from the following biblical episode, “and the children of the prophets who were at Bethel came and said to Elisha: Do you not know that the Lord will take you away? your master today? Elisha answered them: I know it as you do, say nothing about it.” An extract which allows us to attribute our reliquary to the Carmelites. The representations on each of the canivets, of a Sacred heart of Jesus, also confirm its origin.
The whole serves as a setting for four relics, arranged in a cross, including two Agnus Dei. Considered sacramentals, they are usually wax from a Paschal candle in Rome. A Holy relic and a cramped ex-ossibus relic of a Holy Martyr complete this beautiful devotional work from the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century.
Dimensions of 38 cm by 31.5, under its gilded and carved frame and its original glass.
