Historical background:
Dutch painter, born into a family of painters and goldsmiths, he was influenced by several masters, notably Jacobus Houbraken and Abraham van Toorenvliet, but the most decisive was Gérard Dou.
Along with Gérard Dou and Gabriel Metsu, he is classed as one of the Dutch "fijnschilders", painters whose precision is such that their brushstrokes are invisible to the naked eye.
Mieris painted many pictures of aristocratic life, but also of the daily lives of workers.
During his lifetime, Mieris enjoyed an international reputation as a protégé of Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire and Cosimo III de' Medici.
His sons Jan and Willem, and the latter's son Frans, all became talented painters, but never quite reached the level or popularity of their father and grandfather. Frans van Mieris the Elder died on March 12, 1681 in his native town. He is buried in St. Peter's Church in Leiden.
