The Matchmake - Jan Baptist Lambrechts (1680 - after 1731)

Jan Baptist LAMBRECHTS (Antwerp, 1680 - after 1731), L'entremetteuse Canvas. On verso, wax stamp. 40 x 31 cm Expert : M. René MILLET
Lambrechts was born in Antwerp in 1680. His father was Jacob Lambrechts and his mother Anna Deckers. His parents died when he was still young. His half-brother Jeroom Lambrechts taught him to paint. He moved to Lille in 1703 and spent the following years traveling. In 1709, he became master of the local Saint Luke's guild in Antwerp. He left Antwerp in 1731. Lambrechts died shortly afterwards.
Lambrechts was a painter of genre scenes. He preferred to paint tavern scenes. He often painted cooks, maids, vegetable sellers, dancing peasants and drinkers. He also produced a singerie (Un chat jugé par des singes). He was highly regarded for the finesse of his brushwork and the detail of his compositions. He was also gifted at making fine fabrics. Examples of his artistic production can be found at the Uffizi in Florence and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Appraised and authenticated by René Millet, expert in antique paintings and drawings. From early Gothic paintings to rediscovered masterpieces by old masters such as Tiepolo, Jacques-Louis David and Brueghel, Cabinet René Millet puts its expertise at the service of works of art, from their discovery by private individuals to their acquisition at auction by collectors or museum institutions.
