Large panels of yellow silk embroidered with birds and butterflies flying over a bamboo grove. The embroideries are finely executed with an infinity of small stitches giving a surprising clarity to the decor. All subjects are treated with precision and elegance. There are three panels of identical sizes, 2 are of a similar decoration, the third is reversed. We believe that these are panels used during certain events to cover the wooden columns of rich Chinese homes. These silks would have been brought back to France by one of the imperial concubines of the Chinese court at the beginning of the 20th century and kept by her descendants until the 1970s. The yellow background, the quantity and the dimensions would support this assertion. A search by a specialist, in palace inventories, could confirm this possibility. The three silk panels are miraculously in good condition, no tears, no repairs, however one of the three is stained as can be seen in the photos. Chinese characters are embroidered on a coupon which must indicate the name of a weaving workshop?
Each panel measuring 295x125cm, gives a set of 375 x 295cm
It is rare to find such a set in good condition covering such a large surface area.
