Saint Michael Archangel
Oil on canvas (144 x 80 - Framed 159 x 95 cm)
The canvas shows a splendid St. Michael the Archangel subduing the devil. Distinguished by a particularly solemn and spectacular Baroque language, it is the work of a Spanish painter active in the mid 17th century.
The composition is presented with a well-established iconography, where the Archangel is depicted as a young man of rare beauty, echoing the classical image of the warrior.
Strong and delicate at the same time, with outstretched wings, he protects himself thanks to an imposing shield on which a scale is stamped, alluding to his role as an apocalyptic judge, while he raises his crusading staff ready to strike the blow of victory at the rebel angel.
Prince of the heavenly hosts, he is the most powerful of all the angels, thus becoming the symbol of Good defeating Evil.
The soft draperies envelop the angel's body with an intense classicism, where a balanced composition focuses the observer's attention on his angelic face, impassive and defined by soft and gentle forms, which contrasts with the contorted pose and inhuman and malevolent expression of Lucifer.
The beauty that transpires from this work is certainly emphasised by the magnificent colours that have remained unchanged over time, with a particularly warm and vivid colour palette.
