Large cast bronze censer . Japanese work of art .Meiji period.

Colossal lost-wax cast bronze incense burner representing the divine carp ridden by the fisherman who saved her when she was little. To reward him, when she grows up, she takes him to heaven and immortality. Very good quality, flawless cast bronze, careful scraping and perfect carving. The waves are well balanced and the carp is powerful and severe.Monumental bronze sculptures of this quality and size were generally made at the end of the 19th century for universal exhibitions. We have yet to find any trace of it. Despite the quality, this sculpture is anonymous, which is surprising. Beautiful original patina. Good condition, a few small accidents (missing the end of 2 feathers from the eagle's tail and a ribbon from the character's dress. But this does not harm in any way. Wooden base.
Incense burners of this size are very rare and generally formed by a superposition of vases of little artistic interest. Some more interesting models consist of a coiled Dragon, but much rarer are those presenting characters, as here.
