Crespina in Urbino majolica with polychrome "a istoriato" decoration depicting a mythological scene featuring Omphale and Hercules* in the center, covered with his lion skin and holding a woolen spindle, a winged love between them. Omphale is shown on the left, covered in Hercules' animal skin, and on the right, Hercules and Omphale in love. City, lake and mountain landscape in background.
Second half of the 16th century.
Diameter: 26 cm.
Visible damage to the back at the base and crack at 9 o'clock.
*The Pythia condemns Hercules, after killing Iphitos, to be a slave to Omphale, Queen of Lydia. He must spin wool and serve her for several years. They become lovers and even exchange clothes.
