Sebastiano Savorelli (1667 - 1722), The Infant Jesus with the Cross

Sebastiano Savorelli (Forlì 1667 - Bologna 1722) Attributable to
The Infant Jesus with the Cross

Oil on canvas
65 x 48 cm. - with frame 81 x 64 cm.

A glance at the stylistic traits and pictorial workmanship of this beautiful canvas, depicting the infant Jesus seated while holding the cross, is enough to link its origin to the fruitful Emilian school of the second half of the 17th century.

The intimate and softly chiaroscuro tone of this particular subject echoes the fortunate inventions of Carlo Cignani, a great Bolognese painter active between the second half of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th century. Its execution must therefore be referred to an author from his close circle of pupils, with a style that re-proposes the balance between naturalistic taste and the desire to idealise his devotional images, in this case the propensity to reinterpret the pictorial texts of Guercino and Annibale Carracci.

The work is in particular attributable to the hand of painter Sebastiano Savorelli (Forlì 1667 - Bologna 1722), one of the most named by sources among Cignani's Forlì pupils, who always remained very close to the master and helped him in his various undertakings.

The result is therefore of extraordinary emotional delicacy, accentuated by the play of light that shapes the body, making it emerge from the dark background. From the numerous enclosed images, you can verify the quality of this work, which, although simple in structure, is depicted with meticulous detail: the harmoniously rendered figure, the soft drapery of the robes and the fineness with which the individual parts of the body are rendered, are all features that enhance the fine workmanship.
