The Conversion Of Saint Paul - 17th Century

When Saul becomes Paul... On the road to Damascus, dazzled by Divine Grace, our Roman soldier, driven by hatred of Christians, falls from his horse. This Biblical episode is taken from the book of the Acts of the Apostles from which we take an extract: “As he was on his way and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light coming from heaven enveloped him in its brightness. He was thrown to the ground; he heard a voice saying to him: “Saul, Saul, why persecute me? » He asked, “Who are you, Lord? » The voice answered: “I am Jesus, the one you persecute.” Get up and enter the city: you will be told what you must do. » His traveling companions had stopped, speechless with amazement: they heard the voice, but they saw no one. Saul got up from the ground and, although his eyes were open, he saw nothing. They took him by the hand to bring him into Damascus. For three days he was deprived of his sight and remained without eating or drinking. »

Saint Paul of Tarsus is sometimes considered the...thirteenth apostle. It is to a Flemish workshop, in the 1620s, that we owe this work animated by numerous characters, including in the center, Saint Paul on the ground.
