Christ as ‘Man of Sorrows’ (Italy, ca 1500)

Marvellous expression. Great quality. Oil on thick wooden (poplar) panel. Northern Italy ca 1500. The panel has irregular sides and has been carefully imbedded in a wooden rectangle, which has been placed in a contemporary gilt frame with traces of underlying earth red colour. The wood of the upper part of the panel has suffered but has now been treated – as well as the back side of the panel – and consolidated so that it will not deteriorate anymore. A subtle vertical crack in the paint on left side of the panel. UV analysis reveals some minor retouching (torso, between the eyebrows, under the right eye, left side of nose tip and extremity of the right moustache). Considering its age the painting is in overall good condition and the colours have kept their original vivid force.
