An unusual high carat gold ring set with two Roman chromium chalcedony intaglios.
The intaglios date to the 1st - 2nd century AD, the high carat gold ring is modern.
The intaglios measure:
1.1 x 0.75cm and 1 x 0.7cm.
Ring size Q 1/2 UK / 8.25 US.
One intaglio is carved with the image of an elderly man seated before a column, the other with the figure of the sun god Sol.
Chromium chalcedony was widely used in jewellery and seals throughout the Roman Empire. Chromium chalcedony disappeared from use in the ancient world in the 2nd century when the known deposits were mined out.
