Europe, Africa, Asia and America.
They are preparatory studies, in practice sketches, in oil on canvas, measuring 74 x 57.5 cm, carried out in 1709 on commission from Pope Clement XI Albani (1649-1721) for the mosaic decoration project on the pendentives of the chapel of the Baptistery in St. Peter's. The Four Parts of the World are depicted with as many women, surrounded by identifying attributes of distinctive, natural and cultural traits.
Our canvas, practically identical in features, chromatism and size, is a variant of America very similar to the definitive solution and is part of the preparatory works carried out in the Master's workshop.
