Nude (Aicha), 1925 - Samuel Granovsky (Ukrainian, 1882-1942)

Samuel (Chaim Solomonovich ) Granovsky
1889 Jekaterinoslaw (currently in Ukraine) — 1942 Auschwitz
Worked in Paris.

An important pastel on paper.
The nue represents Aicha, who came from Martinique and was the life companion of Sam Granovsky. Aicha was a famous figure in Montmartre, and was painted by Modigliani, Foujita, Kissling, Valotton.

This portrait is the best of a small series of large scale portraits produced in 1925 (he also produced smaller scaled, less finished pastel in the same period). Some are highlighted with gold leaf (like this one).

This is the only portrait in which Aicha's face is visible.

Drawing: 79 x 61 cm
