This superb panel depicting the Virgin with Child and Saint John is a typical example of Lombard Renaissance painting of clearly Leonardesque origin.
The great genius of Leonardo, in fact, with his arrival in Milan towards the end of the 15th century, contributed decisively to the renaissance of painting in Lombardy, influencing a large group of artists with his incomparable style.
Among the most valid followers of his pictorial creed there is certainly his pupil Giovan Pietro Rizzoli aka Giampietrino who, with some of his works, equaled the Supreme Master, perfectly capturing the characteristic nuances of his characters full of mystery and esotericism. sail. Our painting embodies all the peculiarities of his works, expressing at best the very fine taste of this group of authors from the Leonardesque school. The very elegant posture of the Virgin and the almost ambiguous play of the two children who kiss each other, also expressed in the Nordic works, is a subject already elaborated by Giampietrino and obviously the fruit of a painter of his entourage.
