Louis XVI Cuban Mahogany Secretaire à Abattant, 18th Century

Elegant Parisian secretaire in solid mahogany from Cuba and mahogany veneer on three sides.

It opens in the upper part with a drawer and a flap forming a gilt leather writing desk framed in mahogany. It reveals the paperweight with four compartments and six drawers plated in mahogany with small brass rings buttons, one for the writing set. In the lower part, two leaves reveal shelves for archives.

It presents a mahogany belt finely molded under the top drawer. The angles of the uprights are composed in the anterior part of fluted and partly posterior columns of fluted pilasters. The drawers, the flap, as well as the side parts are punctuated with delicate mahogany frames. It rests on four mahogany feet turned.
It is topped with a beautiful molded marble.

This high quality piece of furniture with exemplary finish remains in very good condition.
It is part of the very fine production of mahogany furniture from the last quarter of the 18th century. Extremely precious and fashionable essence, mahogany is here treated in solid, highlighting the quality of its veins, following the lines of a rigorous neoclassicism, completely renouncing the bronzes in favor of a work of molding a great finesse, thus offering a piece whose refinement is matched only by sobriety.

The quality and delicacy of its sculpture, the beauty of the mahogany used, the modernity of its architecture, are the signature of a very good master of French 18th century, such as Fidelis SCHEY, supplier of the Garde Meuble de la Couronne and specialist in mahogany work, or the famous Joseph STÖCKEL.
