René Théodore Berthon (1776/1849)
This artist had David as his master: he alternated between genre, history and portrait. He lived in Vienna and Venice, and did not return to Paris until 1805. He exhibited there for the first time at the salon in 1796: Cloé au bain. Before his departure for Vienna, he painted the portrait of the 1st Consul, which appeared at the Salon of 1801. On his return, he painted: The Surrender of Ulm (Museum of Versailles) commissioned by the Emperor. R.T Berthon is known for his portraits. The portrait that we present is a centerpiece for the artist. The subject represented and the provenance are historical.
