A marble known since Antiquity, Aleppo Breccia was extracted in the commune of Tholonet in the Bouches-du-Rhône ‘French country) from 1712, then in Beaurecueil in 1735 and in Saint-Antonin in 1756. On a yellow background, Aleppo Breccia is composed of large rounded fragments of brown, gray, red or black. This Aleppo Breccia was widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as at the beginning of the 20th century, particularly for furniture tops (chests of drawers, pedestal tables, tables) and fireplaces. Thus, the Carnavalet Museum in Paris preserves a Louis XV chest of drawers in Chinese lacquer, bequest of Madame Bouvier, with a top in Aleppo Breccia.
