Nikolai Sinezubov (1891-1948) - Night street scene

A captivating and atmospheric nocturnal piece by the renowned Russian avant-garde painter, Nikolai Sinezubov. The composition centers on the silhouette of a woman walking away down a dark alleyway under the diffuse, emerald-green glow of a gas streetlamp. In the background, a second mysterious figure is silhouetted in the doorway of a warmly lit building. The artist utilizes a contrasting color palette characteristic of his European period. He subtly plays with chiaroscuro, capturing urban mystery and a dramatic tension close to Expressionism and film noir aesthetics. The reflections of light on the damp pavement bring remarkable texture and depth to the canvas.

Nikolai Sinezubov (Nicolas Sinezouboff) was a major Russian painter and graphic artist. A graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, he belonged to crucial movements of the Russian avant-garde, including the Makovets association, of which he was a founding member. In 1922, his works were showcased at the famous First Exhibition of Russian Art at the Van Diemen Gallery in Berlin. In the late 1920s, he permanently relocated to France (living in Paris and on the French Riviera), fully integrating into the École de Paris (School of Paris). Today, his works are held in prestigious museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, as well as in major international private collections.
