Franz de Paula FERG (1689-1740) - animated ruins

This superb and luminous oil on copper is a characteristic work by Franz de Paula Ferg, the famous Austrian master of genre scenes and Italianate landscapes. The artwork depicts a vibrant everyday scene unfolding at the foot of an imposing ruined building of Roman inspiration, bathed in the soft golden light of a setting sun.

At the center of the composition, a dense group of figures comes to life: riders on their mounts, peasants leading donkeys, and travelers making a halt. On the left, a tall, winding tree elegantly frames the scene, opening the perspective onto a distant rolling landscape beneath a changing sky that blends shades of azure and golden clouds.

Faithful to the great tradition of the Northern "Italianates", Ferg demonstrates here all the virtuosity of his miniaturist brushwork. The copper support, perfectly preserved, imparts an exceptional brilliance, a remarkable chromatic depth, and great finesse to the pictorial layer, visible in both the details of the staffage (the figures and animals) and the rendering of the stone textures.

Biographical Note:Franz de Paula Ferg (1689–1740) initially trained in Vienna under his father Adam Pankraz Ferg, then with Joseph Orient and Hans Graf, before traveling through Germany and settling with immense success in London from 1724 onwards. His works, highly prized by the European aristocracy embarking on the Grand Tour, beautifully combine the technical precision of the Flemish masters with the pastoral grace of the 18th-century French school. Today, his small-scale paintings on copper are preserved in the most prestigious international museums (Vienna, London, Dresden, Hamburg).
