Rombout Uylenburg (1580–1628), Banquet Scene

The author of this painting is the Dutch artist Rombout Uylenburg, who worked in the first quarter of the 17th century. It depicts a banquet scene executed in the grisaille technique, oil on oak panel, 26 x 34 cm. Rombout Uylenburg was a court painter to the Polish King Sigismund III in Gda?sk. He was also a cousin of Saskia van Uylenburgh, the wife of the famous painter Rembrandt. It is highly probable that this rare painting illustrates the biblical parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (specifically, the feast of the heartless rich man). Works by Uylenburg are extremely rare on the art market.For a long time, his name remained in the shadows, but in the 21st century, RKD researchers rediscovered his heritage. In early 17th-century Holland, such monochrome paintings were created as models for engravers. It is known that the artist's brother, the famous art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh (with whom the young Rembrandt lived and worked), owned a collection of 16 works by Rombout.The painting is without restoration and in excellent condition.
