The Country Cousin - Edgar BUNDY (1862-1922)

Edgar BUNDY 1862–1922

Is a painter of genre scenes; a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.

Born in Brighton, Bundy appears to have been largely self-taught, apart from some basic instruction he received as a child from a certain “Alfred Stevens,” likely the artist and sculptor Alfred Stevens (1817–1875).
He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy at the age of 19

Historical scenes were very popular in Britain during the late Victorian era, a time when industrial progress was accelerating and change was constant; the public also sought to recall a bygone past that was simpler and idealized.

Influenced in particular by Pre-Raphaelites such as John Millais and William Morris, as well as the writings of John Ruskin, he places great emphasis on detail, narrative clarity, and technical finesse in his historical compositions.

In this scene, Bundy presents an interior scene: a visit from a cousin from the countryside.
Here, the artist demonstrates his keen sense of visual storytelling
On the left, a young woman wearing a bright red coat stands holding a basket, contrasting with the more composed, stiff yet relaxed posture of the "old gentleman" on the right, who seems to be observing her with a look of surprise and amusement

The composition unfolds with a keen eye for detail, from the richly carved furniture to the textures of the fabrics and carpet, and the characters’ attire, all highlighted by a vibrant, warm color palette.
The cat on the floor adds a touch of realism and everyday warmth.

Far from being merely a static illustration, it creates an almost theatrical scene, where every detail—every gesture, every glance, every prop—helps tell a story.
