Pair of Rococo Silver Candlesticks by P.F.A. TURQUET, Paris, 1844-1855

Fine pair of first standard silver candlesticks, entirely wrought and chased in a bold Rococo taste by the Parisian master silversmith Pierre-François-Augustin TURQUET.

The shaped bases, with deeply contoured outlines, are richly adorned with asymmetrical scrollwork, shells, cartouches, flowers and fruit in high relief. The surfaces alternate between bright polished areas and matted grounds, enhancing the depth and vigour of the ornamentation.

The baluster stem, embellished with spiral fluting and Rococo scroll appliqués, rises from a vigorously shaped terrace base of remarkable decorative dynamism.

The ensemble perfectly illustrates the spectacular taste for naturalistic Rococo models revived in Parisian silverwork during the July Monarchy and the Second Empire.

The detachable nozzles are present and are also in solid silver.
