THE ARTWORK
This remarkable seventeenth century Antwerp cabinet is decorated with finely painted mythological scenes inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Combining sculpture, painting, and craftsmanship, the cabinet reflects the rich collecting culture of the Baroque period and the fascination for classical antiquity within the Antwerp Kunstkammer tradition.
The numerous miniature panels depict episodes of transformation, love, and tragedy drawn from ancient mythology, inviting the viewer to open and explore the object like a visual narrative. Both functional and decorative, the cabinet would have served as a luxurious collector’s piece. Its theatrical structure and intricate imagery make it a true cabinet of wonder, embodying the intellectual and artistic spirit of seventeenth century Antwerp.
