Émile Gallé (1846-1904), Vase With Enameled Thistle Decoration (1890-1894)

Gallé vase produced between 1890 and 1894, with a flattened shape and a hexagonal opening, made of amber-tinted, ribbed, and finely frosted transparent glass, decorated with enameled thistles in shades of pink, mauve, and burgundy with gold highlights. Beneath the neck, an enameled and gilded band bears a whimsical, wheel-engraved Gallé signature related to the piece's decoration. Between 1890 and 1894, Émile Gallé increased the creation of original and whimsical signatures, often in the form of a drawing, frequently related to the piece's decoration. These signatures were always wheel-engraved with a single or double line, or simply acid-etched in intaglio or relief, on the underside of the piece.
