Offered by Baptiste Jamez Fine Arts
A superb set of eighteen so-called “fruit” knives in mother-of-pearl and vermeil from Louis-Philippe period.
The blades, ferrules and end caps are in solid silver, fully gilt with fine gold. They display a bold relief decoration of shells, fluting and mouldings, within a decorative vocabulary inherited from the 18th century and characteristic of the Louis-Philippe style.
The handles, in mother-of-pearl, are engraved with the monogram “AM”, finely incised in Gothic letters.
Hallmarks:
• Minerva, 2nd standard.
• Maker’s mark: PIERRE-FRANÇOIS QUEILLÉ.
Louis-Philippe period.
Length: 19.8 cm.
Weight: 644 g.
Condition report:
Very good state of preservation of the original vermeil. Light surface scratches from use, barely visible in natural light. One handle presents an old restoration to its reverse end (visible in the photographs).
A superb set of knives of impeccable craftsmanship, characteristic of the finest production of the Louis-Philippe period.
QUEILLÉ
PIERRE-FRANÇOIS QUEILLÉ, known as “QUEILLÉ fils” or “QUEILLÉ II”, is the son of the founder of the QUEILLÉ dynasty. He registers his maker’s mark on 23 October 1834, which he uses until 27 November 1846. He is established in Paris at 70 rue du Faubourg-Montmartre, under the sign “À l’Estampé”.
The QUEILLÉ family forms a dynasty of Parisian silversmiths specialising in the production of flatware and table silver throughout the 19th century. The firm is distinguished by remarkable continuity within the family and by the high quality of its production.
The house of QUEILLÉ is founded by the spoon-maker PIERRE-FRANÇOIS QUEILLÉ, who registers his mark in 1808 and remains active until 1834.
He is succeeded by his son, PIERRE-FRANÇOIS QUEILLÉ II, a cutler, who registers his mark on 23 October 1834, struck off on 27 November 1846.
EUGÈNE QUEILLÉ takes over the workshop and registers his mark on 11 February 1847. He is established in rue Saint-Roch-Poissonnière, before the firm is later located at rue des Petits-Carreaux from 1874.
The activity of the house continues until 1895, when the workshop is taken over by ANTOINE LAPARRA.
