Presentation of the Tapestry: "Flora or Spring" This work is a masterpiece from the late 17th century. It belongs to a famous series of four tapestries representing the Four Seasons. It was woven at the Royal Aubusson Manufactory. At that time, it was one of the most prestigious weaving centers in France, working for the nobility and the King.
The Artist: The design (the "model") is attributed to Charles Le Brun. He was the first painter to King Louis XIV. He decorated the Palace of Versailles. His style is recognizable by the balance and nobility of the figures.
The Construction: It is made of wool and silk. The wool provides strength and warmth, while the silk (more expensive) is used for the shimmering details and the faces.
The Dimensions: It is a monumental piece (2.75 m high by 4.66 m wide), designed to completely cover a large stone wall.
The Story of Flora; The tapestry recounts the arrival of Spring through a figure from mythology: the goddess Flora.
The Chariot of Victory: Flora sits on a magnificent chariot. This shows that she has "won" over winter. She brings with her the sun and life.
The Cupids (Putti): On the left, winged children pull the chariot. They exert no physical effort, symbolizing the lightness and gentleness of the spring air.
The Procession: On the right, young women crowned with flowers follow the chariot. They represent the joy of nature's rebirth. They dance and celebrate the return of fertility.
The Setting: The action takes place in an idyllic park with tall trees and, in the background, a castle. This serves as a reminder that nature is "tamed" and ordered for human pleasure.
This tapestry tells the story of the cycle of life. In the 17th century, it was not simply a pretty picture of flowers that was being depicted. It conveyed a message of hope: after the cold and gloom of winter, beauty and abundance always return.
It is also an image of power: just as the goddess Flora restores order and flowers to nature, the King (Louis XIV) brings peace and wealth back to his kingdom.
The Original Frame: It is very important to note that this tapestry retains its original border. This frame, richly decorated with flowers and ornaments, acts as a picture frame, significantly enhancing its historical and artistic value.
