Jules Jacques VEYRASSAT (1828–1893)

Oil on canvas, signed lower right.
Dedicated “à mon cher Normand Saint-Marcel”, dated 1875.

Dimensions: 38.5 × 66.5 cm

Born and died in Paris, and following in the tradition of Troyon and Millet, this painter faithfully depicted the rural world and its daily activities. He became a sensitive interpreter of the horse, portraying it at the watering place, at work in the fields, or resting in the shade of trees. His drawings and watercolors are marked by great precision, while his paintings reveal a particular attention to pictorial material.

A pupil of Lehmann, he first exhibited at the Salon in 1848. He worked mainly in the Île-de-France region, particularly in the Forest of Fontainebleau, as well as in Brittany.

His works are held in the museums of Béziers, Dijon, Lyon, Narbonne, Paris, Pau, Pontoise, Reims, and Valence.
