French Parisian work, Louis XVI period; late 18th century
Superb pair of four-light candelabra in finely chiseled and gilded bronze, with a particularly elegant design typical of the neoclassical aesthetic of the Louis XVI period. Each candelabra is organized around a central shaft in the shape of an antique vase, slender and richly decorated with garlands, draperies, and plant motifs.
Three volute-shaped side arms rise from this vase, highlighted by extremely careful chiseling: acanthus leaves, palmettes, foliage, and small rosettes punctuate their gentle curve. A fourth finial, placed at the top of the shaft, completes the composition. The arms of the candelabra, which are extremely delicate, feature asymmetrical scrolls that lend movement and elegance to the whole.
The candelabra rest on a circular gadrooned base, itself supported by small spindle feet. The architectural decoration of the base—alternating fluting, moldings, and rounded sections—reinforces the monumental character of the model while demonstrating the precision of the chiseling work.
Finely chiseled bronze gilded with mercury. Four lights (three side arms + one central light)
