La Châtelaine or Return from the Fields
Polychrome glazed ceramic, signed A. L. Carrier-Belleuse
H. 86 cm – W. 33 cm – D. 24 cm
Rare polychrome glazed ceramic sculpture depicting a young woman, dressed and coiffed, holding a child on her left arm while feeding a young goat with her right hand. A clothed variant of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse’s Retour des champs, this work, referenced by Florence Slitine in La céramique d’art en Île-de-France (Éd. Mare & Martin, p. 346): “Thus when a statuette by Albert (Retour des champs) becomes, a few pages later, the work of Albert and Louis (La Châtelaine), solely by the fact that the latter is clothed whereas the former is nude,” illustrates the collaboration with his son Louis-Robert. This appears to be the only known example of this model in glazed ceramic.
