Icon of the Crucifixion, Carpathian Mountains, 17th century
An extremely rare icon from the Carpathian Mountains in the Ruthenian language.
The painter of this icon arranged the order of the Stations of the Cross in a very idiosyncratic way.
1. Crowning with Thorns
2. Flagellation of Christ
3. Christ before Pilate
4. Christ before the High Priests
5. Arrest of Christ
6. Condemnation of Christ
7. Tribunal of Christ
8. Kiss of Judas
9. Carrying of the Cross
10. Last Supper
11. Washing of the Feet
12. Christ with the Disciples on the Mount of Olives
The chronologically correct order of the icon starts at the bottom left with the Last Supper and follows counterclockwise until the Carrying of the Cross and finally ends with the Crucifixion of Christ in the middle.
In the center of the icon, the Crucifixion is depicted, with the symbols of the sun and moon at the top left and right.
Next to the themes, the respective descriptions are depicted in verse form on scrolls.
The letters are painted in a type of cuneiform script, the so-called Ruthenian script.
This script belongs to the Slavic ethnic groups in Belarus and Ukraine.
Its use has been documented since the 14th century and remained in use until the beginning of the 18th century.
After that, it was considered extinct.
An extremely rare and perfectly preserved icon from the 17th century,
in a unique, very folk style.
The wood of the icone is fabricated in 3 niveau.
A rare collector's item!
