While primarily known for his urban scenes, van Gulik also explored other subjects such as winter landscapes and beach scenes.

At the age of 15, van Gulik moved to Rotterdam, where he likely pursued his education in art. Rotterdam's cityscape became a prominent feature in his work, reflecting his intimate connection with the bustling urban environment. Throughout his life, van Gulik dedicated himself to capturing the essence of everyday life through his art, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire admirers of Dutch painting.
