Large cup in chamotte clay by Albert Thiry

France, Vallauris, after 1961.
Chamotte earth.
SIGNATURE : Thiry, under the cut.

Made from a beautiful ceramic glazed in polychrome chamotte clay - white/blue, purple, green, made after 1961, the year of creation of Albert Thiry's personal workshop in Vallauris, a famous village of French ceramists since the end of the 19th century, this important cup presents a singular decoration occupying the entire surface of its body, composed of a frieze of intersecting lines. The interior of the cup presents in its center a mythologically inspired ram inscribed in an incised medallion and surrounded by a frieze of palm fronds.

ALBERT THIRY
Born in 1923 in Nice, Albert Thiry trained at the School of Decorative arts in Nice. He subsequently settled with his family in Vallauris from 1943, and continued his training as a trainee in various workshops, notably that of Charles Voltz (1923-1997). In 1956, he was employed as a decorator by Claire and René Batigne who managed the Tapis Vert workshop and thus met important artists of the time such as Marcel Vertès (1895-1961) and Anton Prinner (1902-1983) who introduced him to sculpture in person.
He married Pyot Gavaudan (born in 1933) and together they created their own workshop in 1961. They developed this technique of hollow engravings and decoration in chamotte clay for creations inspired by the decorative arts of mythology and parietal decorations, a technique that we also find on our cup. They very quickly enjoyed significant success since from 1966 to 1974, Albert Thiry participated in the biennales de Vallauris and was awarded the honorary diploma in 1971.
Albert thirty died in 2009.
