Francisco Venegas trained in Seville with Luis de Vargas before moving to Lisbon in 1573, where he became the leading painter, creating several ceilings and paintings for altarpieces. His rare drawings are all held at the MNAA in Lisbon, and ours, in perfect condition, is a preparation for one of the allegories painted in 1580 on wood for the vault of the Sao Rafael chapel in Lisbon's Graçà church. The MNAA holds a study for an Assumption that is very similar in style. This allegory of Justice is in excellent condition, mounted in false margins and framed in an antique cassetta frame.
