Celestial globe in walnut, printed and lacquered paper circa 1770 by Louis Charles DESNOS (1725/1784). French work second half 18th century.
Constellations are figurative. We can note that the positions of the stars up to seventh magnitude incorporate the new constellations observed by La Caille, fourteen of which he represents in instrument form, for example Horologium. The horizon ring bears wind directions and a zodiacal calendar. This globe is part of the terrestrial /celestial pair dedicated in 1768-70 by Desnos to the Marquis de Marigny (1727/1781) brother of Madame de Pompadour and Controller of the King's Buildings.
