Architectural capriccio, Neapolitan school of the eighteenth century

Nicola Viso
(active in Naples in the first half of the 18th century)
Architectural capriccio with temple in ruins and scene of the rest of the Holy Family

Neapolitan school of the eighteenth century
oil on canvas, 38 x 64 cm
With a valuable period frame cm. 50 x 75

For obvious stylistic and qualitative reasons, this composition is to be attributed to the pictorial production of the Neapolitan Nicola Viso, supported by confirmation of the particular typology of the figures, as well as by the inventiveness and execution of the architectures.

It is a highly representative work of the Face, as all aspects of its versatile personality are happily gathered in it: the landscape painter painter of ancient ruins with the figurist. The subject also falls within the typical compositions of the painter, who used to combine suggestive architectural whims with religious themes; in our case the architectural ruins of an imposing temple are the backdrop to the rest of the Holy Family, accompanied by three fluttering angels.

A clear and airy atmosphere, the articulation of the landscape, the delicate chromatic harmony and brightness, suggest a dating around the mid-eighteenth century.

The painting is presumably the pendant of the work proposed by Christie's (Old Master Paintings, Milan, Palazzo Clerici 28 November 2007), depicting a similar architectural whim, with the same measures, and with the episode of the Visitation.
