For sixty-five years, he exhibited regularly at the Salon. He was one of the most characteristic and fruitful representatives of academic painting.
The number of his paintings amounts to nearly 400, most of them important compositions and a large number of portraits.

He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor, of the Order of Leopold of Belgium.
Felix Barrias, a student of L.Cogniet at the École des Beau Arts, was the son of the miniaturist and painter on porcelain Barrias.
