Ikkosai - A Japanese okimono depicting Kintaro

A Japanese ivory okimono depicting Kintaro washing a wild boar with horn eyes helped by a monkey, carved in one piece. The monkey on the side has the task of filling the water inside the tank, while Kintaro, dressed as a sumo wrestler, washes the fur of the animal with a sponge.

Ikkosai engraved signature under the tub.

Kintaro’s friends were creatures of the mountains, such as rabbits, monkeys and wild boars. All the animals liked Kintaro. They played sumo together, but no one could ever beat Kintaro. A bear who was very proud of his strength decided to face Kintaro, saying “I will fight you”, but Kintaro won.
