Lassitude, gilt bronze vase - Charles Vital-Cornu (1851-1927)

Gilt bronze vase decorated with poppies and a dozing woman, her arms surrounding the neck.
Charles Vital-Cornu (1851-1927) was a student of Pils, Jouffroy and Delaplanche. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1874 to 1923 and became a member in 1885. He received numerous awards for his work, including the Bronze Medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition and a Silver Medal at the 1890 Exhibition. His work is characteristic of Art Nouveau.
The poppy, the flower of dreams, suggests the languorous inebriation of the sleeping woman.
