George of Lydda, born in 280 at Mazaca in Cappadocia, was canonized as a Sauroctonian saint in 494.
Christian martyr, known for having struck down the dragon under the walls of Silene (cf. "the golden legend", Jacques de Voragine), he is the patron saint of the Christian knighthood, of the kingdom of Great Britain since the year 800, of Georgia, and of the armourers.
He is an allegory of the victory of the Christian faith over the devil, or more broadly of good over evil.
