"Satyre et bacchante" d'après James Pradier (1790-1852)

Bronze group published during the second half of the nineteenth century, after the original marble work exhibited at the Salon of 1834. At that time, this sculpture with a daring theme caused a certain scandal. Signature J. Pradier in cursive letters on the base, brown patina of origin in very good condition, a missing accessory (tambourine) leaving a slight trace at the back of the statue.

Jean-Jacques (known as James) Pradier was born in Geneva in 1790, beginning with the study of drawing, his aptitude led him to the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1808 where he learned sculpture in the studio of Frédéric Lemot. 1st Prize of Rome in 1813, he stayed four years at the Villa Medici, exhibited at the Salon in 1819 and returned to Rome in 1823 and 1841. Considered the most talented sculptor during the reign of Louis-Philippe, he will respond to many public commissions including the Victories for the tomb of Napoleon at the Invalides, the Fame of the Arc de Triomphe, five statues of the fountain of the Esplanade in Nîmes ...
