Son of Pierre Jean Castan, writing master, Théophile Constant Castan was born in Millau on May 1, 1814.
To date, we know of no particular element that can shed light on his artistic training, the catalogs of the Salon not informing us about his masters.
Théophile Castan therefore made two appearances at the Paris Salon: the first in 1845 with a “Portrait of a young man, the head resting on the right hand” and the second in 1846 with a “Portrait of a young man”.
By his hand, two paintings are also known to us in the public collections deposited in the Rodez museum, namely a self-portrait and a scene from local history: "Les Regulus villefranchois (Guillaume Garrigues, judge-mage of Rouergue, and Pierre Pollier , bourgeois, refusing to take the oath to the Black Prince in 1365.)”
The artist died in Fontainebleau on April 10, 1878 at the age of 63.
