This lovely pair of gilded wooden sconces is a Northern Italian production. The base of these sconces is made of a single piece of wood, proof of the dexterity of the craftsmen. The decoration consists of scrolls, acanthus leaves and small geometric shapes. In their center, the two sconces are decorated with two coats of arms: on the left Or, the lion of sable, armed, lampassed and crowned of gules; which is of the family Maletti of Turin. Right: Gules, three bends bretessed Or, which is of the family Beggiamo, great lords in the plain of the Po.
This meeting of coats of arms may indicate that these sconces were made for a wedding. Certainly offered as gifts to the couple to decorate and furnish their home, this pair represents the union of the two families.
In an excellent state of preservation, with the gilding still very visible and with a natural patina, these charming sconces illustrate a refinement and a decorative wealth of the most appreciable.
