Four color gold medallion pendant. Eagle's head hallmark for 18 carat gold. It is richly decorated with flowers in relief in an entourage of fine pearls. The back is entirely guilloché with small pellets. It is surmounted by a knot and the bail has the same decor. It opens with a hinge on a small pivoting window allowing small souvenirs to be slipped in discreetly. The Fontana house is one of the best known in Paris. It was founded by Thomas Fontana (1813-1661) who came from Switzerland and settled under the arcades of the Palais Royal. Charles, his son took over the business helped by his nephews Joseph Fontana and Alexandre Templier. The company Ch.Fontana et Cie lasted 10 years from 1861 to 1871. The Fontanas have always been renowned for their classic and rich jewelry attracting a large clientele in the Parisian bourgeoisie.
