A painter, landscape artist, watercolorist, and printmaker, he began his career at the age of 27 when he entered the studio of the painter Jean Achard, which he left for Flanders and Germany during the Revolution of 1848.

In November 1849 he left for Italy to discover Naples, Sorrento, Capri and especially Rome where he was a resident at the Villa Medici.

In the 1850s, back in France, he met Corot who introduced him to the painters of the Barbizon School. Following his elders, Corot, Daubigny, Rousseau, the painter entered into communion with the landscape, his paintings became the reflection of this dialogue, he however quickly detached himself from their way of working

Recognized by the critics, appreciated by many collectors, he became the :
"Symbol of the revival of landscape in France,

This is what the Goncourts called "the victory of the landscape", a new school of landscape painting where one finds landscape painters who settled in Barbizon or Marlotte. We could also call this school "naturalist" if we consider that their goal is to render the landscape in its truth.

While at the end of his life, honors and medals rained down upon him, Harpignies retained the same generosity. In all that he realized, from the decorations of the Opera to the most modest studies, he experienced the same manifest pleasure, combining vigor and meticulousness to constantly renew with as much sobriety as elegance a feeling of nature where mysticism and sensuality are confused.

Designated by Antole France as the "Michelangelo of the Trees
He is still recognized today as
One of the Masters of landscape painting of the 19th century.
