An early 16th century Flemish Oak Altar fragment depicting the Lamentation
Approximate size: 34.5 cm x 19 cm
The present fragment, once forming part of a larger altarpiece, is rigorously carved in high relief. The figure of Christ rests on the ground amid standing attendants in mourning. The hovering form of Christ almost floats above the ground, intimating his future resurrection.
Displayed on a later cream velvet backing with wooden base.
